As a father of three children and three step-children, I understand the difficulties of being a parent. This can become so much more difficult when the child begins to display symptoms of hyperactivity. When he/she can not keep attention in class, or is unable to sit still and is constantly creating problems in class, our society calls out to drug and maintain these 'problem' children. Add to that the new research showing that Stratera, a popular drug used for ADHD, can lead to suicidal tendencies, and the need for a healthy alternative becomes critical.
There are many factors to consider, any of which can create problems. Vaccinations have often been linked to hyperactivity as well as autism, to learn more check out National Vaccine Information Center. Other factors include heavy metal toxicity, blood sugar imbalance, social conditions, and, of course, diet.
There are many nutritional resources that can be safely tried to correct the situation. Cutting back on sugars and grains, as well as all processed foods is a great way to start. Never give your child simple carbohydrates to start their day, this tends to set off all the challenges that may last throughout the day. Protein is a much better choice, such as eggs or a protein shake. Avoid all food colorings and anything containing MSG or NutraSweet.
One very effective way of dealing with hyperactivity is called EEG Neurofeedback. This non-drug method has helped thousands of children as well as adults to function better and to learn to use their brain more effectively.
Exercise and nutrition is always the key, be sure that your child is active physically and avoids excess television and computer games. There are also several nutrients that have shown to be helpful in treating this condition. Omega 3 is always my first choice, and should be given to your child every morning. (link to Orthomega). Liquid omegas are also available if the child is unable to swallow pills. Other nutrients that have shown beneficial for hyperactivity as well as most neurological imbalances are zinc and magnesium. Constipation is often a problem, and specific digestive enzymes plus extra magnesium may offer tremendous relief.
If heavy metals are a concern, which I believe they generally are, consider a chelating supplement to help the body to cleanse itself of these toxins. Please contact me for specific information on these types of supplements or any other specific concerns regarding these conditions.
