The “Free Radical Theory of Aging”, has become an accepted cause of aging. Oxidative stress is the destructive condition that occurs when there are excessive free radicals (think of rust on a car). These free radicals attack our cells and may cause significant damage in the form of aging. Unfortunately, due to our declining consumption of fruits and vegetables, many people are seriously deficient in antioxidant activity. Antioxidant activity can be measured in units on a scale called ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbency Capacity). The average serving of a fruit or vegetable measures approximately 500 ORAC units. The USDA now recommends at least 6-10 servings of fruits and vegetables. A single dose (2 tablets) of EAQ10 has an ORAC score of 6,328 units or roughly equivalent to the antioxidant activity in over 12 servings of fruits and vegetables.

How does the ORAC test work?

A sample of an antioxidant in the form of food, drink, fruit, nutritional supplement, vitamin or chemical substance (examples include: orange juice, carrots. Vitamin E etc.) is put in a test tube to see how long it takes to neutralize or destroy the free radicals. This substance is then given an ORAC score that reflects the power and speed with which it does its job as an antioxidant.

Many juice companies have jumped on the ORAC bandwagon boasting that a bottle of their juice yields values in the neighborhood of 30,000 to 50,000 ORAC units. This is extremely misleading because the values are for the entire bottle and not per serving. Comparatively speaking, if EAQ10 was measured on a per bottle basis, or formula would yield a value of nearly 200,000 ORAC units.
